Pray First—Establishing a rhythm of prayer

Prayer has a funny way of becoming the thing we know we should do while also becoming the thing we somehow save until the end.

We make the phone call. We Google it. We run through every possible scenario in our heads. We make a plan, a backup plan, and perhaps a slightly panicked backup to the backup plan. And then, somewhere along the way, we remember: Oh yeah. I should probably pray about this.

But what if prayer wasn't the last thing we reached for when we ran out of ideas? What if it became the rhythm underneath everything else?

That's really the heart behind "pray first." It isn't about adding another spiritual task to your morning routine or becoming the kind of person who wakes up at 4:30 am with a journal, three highlighters, and an impressive amount of enthusiasm. It's about learning to turn toward God first—before the worry takes over, before we start fixing, before we decide we can handle it ourselves.

And like any rhythm, that takes practice.

Prayer reminds us that we aren't carrying our lives alone. It gives us somewhere to bring the things we can't fix, the questions we can't answer, the people we can't change, and even the ordinary stuff that seems too small to mention. It moves God from the margins of our day back to the center.

This week's devotional invites us to take an honest look at the place prayer actually holds in our lives—and begin building a rhythm where talking to God isn't reserved for emergencies. It's simply where we start.
