Lessons from Jonah

Jonah is one of those Bible stories most of use know—or at least think we do. We remember the runaway prophet, the giant fish, and maybe a few vacation Bible school images along the way. But once you look past the fish, you discover that Jonah's story is really about something much closer to home.
It's about us.
It's about the ways we run from God when obedience gets uncomfortable. It's about how quickly we celebrate mercy when it's directed our way, but struggle when someone else receives the same grace. it's about expectations, pride, compassion, and the uncomfortable realization that sometimes the biggest obstacle to God's work isn't the people far from Him—it's the people who already know Him.
Jonah forces us to wrestle with some honest questions. Do we trust God even when His plans don't line up with ours? Are we more concerned with being right than seeing people restored? Have we forgotten just how much mercy we've received ourselves?
The good news is that Jonah isn't just a story about a stubborn prophet. It's the story of a relentlessly faithful God who pursues people who run, patiently teaches people who resist, and refuses to give up on either side of the equation. He chases the rebellious prophet just as faithfully as He reaches for the wicked city.
That's good news for every one of us, because we've all played both roles at different times.
This week's devotional invites us to look beyond the familiar story and discover the God whose mercy is bigger than our failures, wider than our prejudices, and deeper than our understanding. Along the way, we may find that the person God wants to transform most isn't someone else—it's us.
